OVERVIEW
Javelin Semiconductor’s 3G CMOS Power Amplifiers deliver high performance with long battery life for 3G mobile handsets.

Based on a unique patented architecture implemented in standard CMOS, Javelin’s PAs are the first 3G power amplifiers to be sourced from the same large CMOS foundries that ship memory, 2G/3G basebands, and BT/FM/WLAN SoCs into mobile handsets.

Javelin’s PAs feature excellent linearity, low current consumption, and integrated TX filtering that delivers the best noise in the industry.  The PAs are based on an industry standard 3x3 mm footprint and require no custom software.

Industry-Leading Noise Performance

Mobile handsets require multiple radio functions, including not only the 3G radio but also additional capabilities such as GPS, Bluetooth, GSM/EDGE and WLAN. Because of the compact form factor, achieving excellent receiver sensitivity despite interference among radios is an important challenge for handset designers.

The Javelin PAs integrate TX filtering that delivers excellent receiver sensitivity. As the RF signal passes through the PA, the unwanted out-of-band noise is filtered out. Furthermore, the thermal noise at the PA output is greatly reduced beyond the level of a conventional GaAs PA. The resulting signal at the output of the PA contains much less total noise than a GaAs PA, resulting in improved receiver sensitivity, better coverage and minimized interference among the various radios in the handset.

Low Average Current

Today’s 3G handsets and datacards operate at maximum power occasionally but spend most of the time at medium and low output power levels. The standard usage model for benchmarking PAs is published in the GSMA DG.09 specification. The unique architecture of Javelin's PAs optimizes performance especially at medium and low output power levels, resulting in the industry’s lowest average current. Low average current translates to longer talk times and less heat generated inside the mobile handset.
